Middle Eastern Shawarma Sauce and Marinade
Our Middle Eastern Shawarma is a deeply layered aromatic marinade with notes of citrus and warm spices. An almost perfect pairing for simple grilled or roasted chicken, a shawarma meal is elevated further by the layering of traditional Middle Eastern sides - think yogurt, pita, hummus - think in the terms of a gyros or a donner kebab. Shawarma is a favorite go to cuisine and weeknight meal for us. Fresh, quick, light, healthy and delicious.
What is Shawarma?
A traditional Middle Eastern blend of truly exotic spices born out of the Ottoman Empire. Spices including cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and black pepper are infused with layers of citrus including fresh lemon and our house-made candied oranges. The sauce is finished with a hint of fresh mint.
The sauce is quite aromatic and deliciously satisfying. A simple way to enjoy a shawarma-centered meal is to marinade chicken, lamb or beef with the sauce (or you can do roasted cauliflower or homemade falafel if eating plant based), grill or roast the protein or vegetable (whatever you are using), then serve with warm grilled pita, a simple side salad of fresh tomato, cucumber and red onion and a side of hummus and garlic yogurt sauce. This combination of sides leads to absolute perfection in our eyes - one of our all time favorite weeknight meals. I'd say we enjoy this at least once a week.
Of the dry Shawarma spice blends out there, many fall short without the layering of bright notes from the citrus and acids as in our Middle Eastern Shawarma. This attention to detail, not only keeps with tradition and overall, rounds out and balances the marinade, but is paramount for this spice blend to really do its job as a marinade and sauce as the acid enables faster and deeper results. As a result a little goes a long way.

Middle Eastern Shawarma Vegan Gyros- Simply skip the meat for deeply satisfying vegan Gyros, kebabs and salads. Our favorites are butternut squash, cauliflower and of course traditional falafel.
Middle Eastern Shawarma Salad- Layer all your favorite Gyro ingredients onto a bed of your favorite mixed greens (hummus, yogurt sauce, cucumber, etc.) and skip the bread (no rules - you go for it)
